Gadolinium iron alloy is used to replace gadolinium in NdFeB, which can improve the yield of NdFeB and reduce the cost of NdFeB. In general, gadolinium iron alloy is prepared by industrial scale electrolysis with GdF3-LiF binary system as electrolyte, pure iron as cathode, graphite as anode and gadolinium oxide as raw material.
It is mainly used as an additive for NdFeB permanent magnets to improve the performance of magnets. It is also used in tube materials for nuclear reactors, magnetic refrigeration working media and magneto-optical recording materials for hydrogen storage alloy substrates, and for special steels.
