Thulium Oxide, also called Thulia, is the important dopant for silica-based fibre amplifiers, and also have specialized uses in ceramics, glass, phosphors, lasers. Because the wavelength of Thulium-based lasers is very efficient for superficial ablation of tissue, with minimal coagulation depth in air or in water. This makes Thulium lasers attractive for laser-based surgery. It can also be used in portable X-ray devices that has been bombarded in a nuclear reactor as a radiation source.

Thulium oxide (Tm2O3) is a compound containing the rare earth element thulium. Its applications are somewhat limited compared to some other rare earth oxides, but it does find use in specific areas:
1.Fiber Lasers and Amplifiers:
Thulium-doped fiber lasers and thulium-doped fiber amplifiers are important applications of thulium oxide. These lasers operate in the mid-infrared wavelength range, typically around 2 micrometers. They are used for various purposes, including:Medical and cosmetic procedures, such as laser surgery and dermatology treatments.
Material processing, including cutting and welding.
Remote sensing, spectroscopy, and atmospheric monitoring.
Scientific research and military applications.
2.High-Index Glass:
Thulium oxide is sometimes used as a component in high-index glass formulations for specialized optical applications, particularly in the infrared region.
3.Neutron Radiography:
Thulium-170, which can be obtained by irradiating thulium oxide with neutrons, is used in neutron radiography for non-destructive testing and imaging in industrial and scientific applications.
4.Scintillation Detectors:
Thulium-doped scintillation materials can be used in radiation detectors and imaging systems for gamma-ray spectroscopy and medical imaging.
Thulium oxide also used for producing fluorescent materials, laser materials, glass ceramic additives, etc.
