Introduction to the uses and application fields of barium

Introduction

The content of barium in the earth's crust is 0.05%. The most common minerals in nature are barite (barium sulfate) and witherite (barium carbonate). Barium is widely used in electronics, ceramics, medicine, petroleum and other fields.

Electronics Industry

1.Electronics Industry

One of the important uses of barium is as a getter to remove trace gases from vacuum tubes and picture tubes. It is used in the state of an evaporative getter film, and its function is to generate chemical compounds with the surrounding gas in the device to prevent the oxide cathode in many electron tubes from reacting with harmful gases and deteriorating performance.

Barium aluminum nickel getter is a typical evaporative getter, which is widely used in various power transmission tubes, oscillator tubes, camera tubes, picture tubes, solar collector tubes and other devices. Some picture tubes use nitrided barium aluminum getters, which release a large amount of nitrogen in the evaporative exothermic reaction. When a large amount of barium evaporates, due to the collision with nitrogen molecules, the getter barium film does not adhere to the screen or shadow mask but gathers around the tube neck, which not only has good getter performance, but also improves the brightness of the screen.

2.Ceramic industry

Barium carbonate can be used as pottery glaze. When barium carbonate is contained in the glaze, it will form pink and purple.

Ceramic industry

Barium titanate is the basic matrix raw material of titanate series electronic ceramics and is known as the pillar of the electronic ceramics industry. Barium titanate has high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, excellent ferroelectric, piezoelectric, pressure resistance and insulation properties, and is widely used in ceramic sensitive components, especially positive temperature coefficient thermistors (PTC), multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCS), thermoelectric elements, piezoelectric ceramics, sonar, infrared radiation detection elements, crystal ceramic capacitors, electro-optical display panels, memory materials, polymer-based composite materials and coatings.

3.Fireworks Industry

Barium salts (such as barium nitrate) burn with a bright green-yellow color and are often used to make fireworks and flares. The white fireworks we see are sometimes made with barium oxide.

Oil Extraction

4.Oil Extraction

Baryte powder, also known as natural barium sulfate, is mainly used as a weighting agent for oil and gas drilling mud. Adding barite powder to the mud can increase the specific gravity of the mud, balance the weight of the mud with the underground oil and gas pressure, and thus prevent blowout accidents.

5.Pest control

Barium carbonate is a white powder that is insoluble in water but soluble in acid. It is toxic and is often used as rat poison. Barium carbonate can react with hydrochloric acid in gastric juice to release toxic barium ions, causing poisoning reactions. Therefore, we should avoid accidental ingestion in daily life.

6.Medical industry

Barium sulfate is an odorless and tasteless white powder that is neither soluble in water nor in acid or alkali, so it does not produce toxic barium ions. It is often used as an auxiliary drug for X-ray examinations for gastrointestinal imaging examinations, commonly known as "barium meal imaging".

Medical industry

Radiological examinations use barium sulfate mainly because it can absorb X-rays in the gastrointestinal tract to make it develop. It has no pharmacological effect itself and will be automatically excreted from the body after ingestion.

These applications demonstrate the versatility of barium metal and its importance in industry, especially in the electronics and chemical industries. The unique physical and chemical properties of barium metal make it play an indispensable role in many industries.
