Holmium oxide, also known as holmium trioxide, has the chemical formula Ho2O3. It is a compound composed of the rare earth element holmium and oxygen. Together with dysprosium oxide, it is one of the strongest known paramagnetic substances. Holmium oxide is a component of erbium oxide minerals. In its natural state, holmium oxide often coexists with trivalent oxides of lanthanide elements, and special methods are required to separate them. Holmium oxide can be used to prepare glass with special colors. The visible absorption spectrum of glass and solutions containing holmium oxide has a series of sharp peaks, so it is traditionally used as a standard for calibrating spectrometers.
Molecular formula: Formula: Ho2O3
Molecular weight: M.Wt: 377.88
CAS number: 12055-62-8
Physical and chemical properties: light yellow crystalline powder, isometric crystal system scandium oxide structure, insoluble in water, soluble in acid, easy to absorb carbon dioxide and water when exposed to air.
Application: manufacturing new light source dysprosium holmium lamp, etc.
Packaging: 25KG/barrel or packaged according to customer requirements.
Appearance properties: Depending on the lighting conditions, holmium oxide has quite significant color changes. It is light yellow under sunlight and strong orange-red under three primary color light sources. It is almost indistinguishable from erbium oxide under the same light. This is related to its sharp phosphorescence emission band. Holmium oxide has a wide band gap of 5.3 eV and, therefore, should be colorless. The yellow color of holmium oxide is caused by a large number of lattice defects (such as oxygen vacancies) and the internal conversion of Ho3+
Uses: 1. Used to manufacture new light sources, dysprosium-holmium lamps, and can also be used as an additive for yttrium iron or yttrium aluminum garnet and to produce holmium metal.
2. Holmium oxide can be used as a yellow and red colorant for Soviet diamond and glass. Glass containing holmium oxide and holmium oxide solutions (usually perchloric acid solutions) have sharp absorption peaks in the spectrum range of 200-900nm, so they can be used as standards for spectrometer calibration and have been commercialized. Like other rare earth elements, holmium oxide is also used as a special catalyst, phosphor and laser material. The wavelength of holmium laser is about 2.08 μm, which can be either pulsed or continuous light. This laser is harmless to the eyes and can be used in medicine, optical radar, wind speed measurement and atmospheric monitoring.
